BISD Moderate Cognitively Impaired Program
Star Elementary
The Moderate Cognitively Impaired classroom includes children with ages ranging from 6-15 with a wide range of disabilities and abilities. In the room, academic areas
such as math, practical math skills, pre-reading and reading skills, pre-writing and writing skills, and science are covered. Daily living skills, life skills, and social skills are just some of
the other areas that are taught in the classroom.
Young Adult Program
The Young Adult Program consists of students ages 16-26 who have a wide range of abilities and disabilities. The program focuses on employability, daily living, life skills, leisure, social skills, and functional academics in order to prepare students for employment and adult living after age 26.

Carissa Foster
Carissa Foster is the teacher in the Moderate Cognitively Impaired classroom located at Star Elementary School. She attended Montcalm Community College for
two years and received her Associate's degree in Arts and Sciences. She received her Bachelor's of Science in Education from Central Michigan University. She is certified to teach Special

Joyce Lee
Joyce has a Bachelor of Science degree in education for the Mentally Impaired with a minor in English and Early Childhood
that she received at Western Michigan University and is currently pursuing a Master's degree in Learning Disabilities at
Grand Valley State University. She has been teaching the Young Adult Program since 2001 and has worked in the field of
education for eight years prior to becoming employed at BISD. In addition, Joyce is also the Homeless Liason and Homeland
Security representative for the ISD. You can
