Delton-Kellogg 7th-grader wins Barry ISD Regional Spelling Bee
“Prodigal” was the word of the evening, as it came down to Autumn Russell, the Regional Spelling Bee winner from Delton-Kellogg Middle School.
Twenty-six best spellers in the Barry ISD constituency competed in front of an audience of family and friends during the competition held Tuesday, Feb. 23, at the Hastings High School Lecture Hall.
In the twelfth round pronouncer Mary Collier, Delton-Kellogg teacher, asked Autumn Russell to spell the word "prodigal". Autumn repeated the word and spelled it correctly. Mrs. Collier visually confirmed with the judges Becky McComb, Jennifer Richards, Kathleen Woloszyk, Audience Advocate-Chris Cooley, and Rounds Keeper-Julie Guenther, making Autumn the Barry ISD’s 2010 Regional Spelling Bee Champion.
The runner-up, Aaron Hamlin, missed in the 11th round on “quesadilla”.
Following the competition, all pariticipants received certificates and Autumn and Aaron received their Champion and Runner-up certificates. Through applause the crowd congratulated all spellers for their excellence in spelling.
Autumn advances to compete in the Greater Grand Rapids Final Spelling Bee, scheduled for Tuesday, March 23 at the Gerald R. Ford Museum Auditorium in Grand Rapids.

The Advanced/Accelerated steering committee continues to meet to determine potential programming for this school year and updates will be posted on this page.
BISD does have a library of Advanced/Accelerated materials and if you would like to view those, please contact Julie Guenther at 269-945-9545 X: 163
